Frolicon Review
"The Naughty Side of Paradise", this is the tagline for this over-21 science fiction convention held in Atlanta Georgia. However, the convention is more of an adult convention versus a science fiction one. The panels/activities were broken out into the kink track, main programming track, think track and the sync track. There were a few panels on Anime, Furries, makeup and gaming. Several Steampunk groups and vendors also attended. But, this wasn’t the usual sci-fi convention.
A comedy of errors and Murphy’s Law, prevented me from attending Frolicon on Thursday night as had been planned. But, I did make it Friday to register. I arrived as soon as they opened. Considering how short the line was, the registration process was slow. And, I had pre-registered! The "native guides" aka staff was helpful and very visible.
Attendance was good. The venue was nice. More elevators would have been great. But the waits were not too long to get upstairs for the parties and the con suite. The panels, gaming, dances and more were held on the second level of the hotel with access to a lower level where the kink track activities were held. Discreetly curtained access was setup so as to protect the privacy of the attendees. The convention had a dealer’s room, artists, authors, musicians and fan tables.
The funniest activity I attended was the Hyno-Dave show. It was too funny. I also went to the Bettie Page look-a-like contest. All the girls were good but I would have picked a different winner. There was an Easter Bonnet contest and a costume one. Big Mama D’s Burlesque show was very good. It was in the spirit of vaudeville. The dresses were amazing.
This is not a convention for the shy or the easily embarrassed by alternative lifestyles. It was a fun con. Everyone, fans, staff, and guests all seem to have a good time. But, it is not really a sci-fi convention.
