AnachroCon Review
"Imagine the possibilities..." is the catch phrase for this two year old convention held in Atlanta GA. With Steampunk at its roots, this convention offers attendees a chance to say "what if..." and to see that come to life in the costuming, music and panels. As a Steampunk aficionado myself, I went to this convention for many reasons. The primary reason was the costuming. If Anime has the most colourful costuming, Steampunk has the most imaginative because anything goes. The only limitation is you.
Like most conventions, Anachrocon offered panels ranging from History, Science, Classic Sci-fi, and Costuming. There were dances and music by local and regional groups. As well as, the traditional costume contest and late night parties. The weather turned out to be sunny and a bit breezy which worked out well since some panels were held outdoors. Registration was quick and instead of the traditional lanyard we were presented with a very nice square pin, like a keepsake.
The convention had about 350 attendees making this more of a party with close friends. The hotel was on the smallish size and there was some congestion in moving around. And, there wasn’t a restaurant on site, per se; but, around the corner was a sit-down place and there were several fast food chains on the main street. This was the last year the convention would be held here with the move due to the growth in the convention.
All in all, this was a good convention. Price and location were pluses. But the main draw was the costuming. Check out the pictures that have been uploaded or go to http://anachrocon.com/ to see the official convention photos. When you do, take a close look at the accessories and the details that were put into the work. Steampunk appears to be THE costuming genre right now. It has exploded across the cosplay world. There are forums, magazines, meetups, masquerades and conventions devoted to the phenom. Once you experience it you will see why.
