SciFi Summer Con Review
This convention is held in Atlanta each year. I currently have a 5 year membership and this was my third year attending. The hotel changed for 2010 for the betterment of the fans and the convention. Of the three years I have attended, I had the most fun this year even though there were more issues.
Registration seemed to start late and appeared disorganized. It was located in a much smaller space than the prior years. The overall impression was a feeling of being cramped. The program guide, too, seemed less than normal. After registering and hanging out with some friends, I helped out in the Con Suite until the Pirates took over. Now this was fun. Everyone, at some point, makes it to the Con Suite. The room was nice size with a balcony and kitchen area. The karaoke machine was set up here too. And I would have to say this was the hub for the convention. Later that night there was a rave with lots of glow. There was also late night videos and gaming.
Saturday morning saw activity throughout the hotel. From, the newly formed, Two Men and a Gorilla band playing in the halls, to costumers, gamers and panel goers. Unfortunately, the Con Suite opened late and there were many who needed that caffeine fix who had to wait. The dealer’s room had a good bit to choose from if you wanted to shop. And, a slave auction and costume contest offered many photo ops. One of the last panels of the day and definitely the funniest was the Trivia Contest hosted by Jeff Uglyshoes of the Cemetery Surfers. Saturday night was party night. The Special Patrol Group and the Pirates held simultaneous parties. Unfortunately, the hotel staff seemed to have gotten some misinformation about how long the parties would be held and both had to close up earlier than planned. But, while they were going on, fun was had.
Sci-Fi Summer Con, albeit small, offers something in almost all genres of the scifi world. It is a friendly convention. And while, this year did see some unexpected issues, it was a good weekend spent with several hundred of my closest friends.
