Mana-Con Comic Convention Announced in Manatee County Florida

Bradenton, FL (September 13, 2012) – The Manatee County Central Library is pleased to announce its third annual Mana-Con: Comics Convention for Teens to be held at the library on Saturday, October 6, 2012 starting at 11:00 a.m. and continuing through 4:00 p.m. Open to everyone, but targeted to teens ages 12-18, Mana-Con will provide an opportunity for kids to create art, play games, win prizes, show up in costume—in general, to have a blast! The first 100 teen and child attendees will receive awesome goodie bags filled with candy, glow bracelets, games, bookmarks and other goodies. All kids and teens will receive a free comic and/or poster while supplies last.

There will be local comic shops in attendance including The Comic Shack, as well as artists with items for sale, student artwork on display, costumed characters, a Martial arts demonstration by DOJO Martial Arts, a kimono display, crafts and more. Teens are encouraged to get creative at the Doodle Booth, Origami Station, and the Duct Tape Station. They will also learn about the history of comics and get a look at the library’s large graphic novel and manga collection, which will be on display and available for check-out. Face painting will be available on a first come, first serve basis from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

New this year is the Cosplay Runway! Teens are eligible to enter this costume contest and win prizes like an iPod Nano. Also new this year is the 1st annual Star Wars Reads Day…sponsored by Lucasfilms. Younger attendees can play games like LEGO Star Wars on the Wii and win prizes, and get a Star Wars button in the children’s program room all day during Mana-Con. They might even run into a Star Wars Stormtrooper!

There will be a “What the Library Means to Me” Comic Strip Contest (open to ages 12-18 only). Entry forms will be available at the start of the day, with the finished strips due later in the day. The winner will be announced at the end of the day and will receive an iPod touch.

Anime artist Hihoshi will lead Anime Art workshops at 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. 25 seats are available for each workshop and registration is required; ages 12- 18 are eligible. Children’s librarian Chris Culp will conduct a workshop on Sumi Ink Painting at 2:30 p.m. There are 25 seats available for this free workshop and registration is required; ages 8 - 18 are eligible. All art supplies will be provided for all workshops, and a special prize given away at each workshop.

October 6th is also opening day of Realize Bradenton's Farmer's Market, just a couple of blocks from the Library. Head over to Main Street (12th Street West) for some lunch, fresh veggies, and stop by the new Family Activities tent to color original Mana-Con artwork by Hihoshi and watch artists at work.

Mana-Con is made possible through generous donations by the Friends of the Central Library. The Friends are a support organization for Manatee County’s Central Library. Monies raised by the Friends go toward programs and services that tax dollars alone cannot provide.
